LABRADORS are the nation's top dog for the 20th year running.

According to the Kennel Club, 45,233 labrador retriever puppies were registered last year, more than double their nearest rival, the cocker spaniel. Labs are also the most popular dogs in the US.

They first overtook German shepherds as the UK's favourite breed in 1989 - largely thanks to the Andrex ads. The top 10 most popular breeds stayed the same for the sixth consecutive year, though some have moved positions. Rottweilers dropped to 20th place-a fall of 60 per cent in two years.
