L.A. GEAR ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT OF REEBOK
 PATENT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT
LOS ANGELES, CA, Nov. 12, 1992 /PRNewswire/ -- L.A. Gear, Inc. (NYSE: LA) announced today that it has settled a patent infringement lawsuit pending against the Company in the United States District Court in Boston, Massachusetts. The lawsuit was filed on October 27, 1992 by Reebok International Ltd. and alleges that certain footwear products marketed by the Company infringe on the patent issued to Reebok on October 27, 1992 for "The Pump" inflatable shoe technology.
Pursuant to the settlement agreement, all claims pending against L.A. Gear in the lawsuit will be extinguished and the Company will pay $1 million to Reebok. As a condition to the settlement and in exchange for future payments based on the Company's sales of certain footwear, the Company has entered into a license agreement under which Reebok has granted L.A. Gear a non-exclusive worldwide license to manufacture, sell, distribute and market footwear utilizing the "inflatable bladder" technology covered by Reebok's patent, subject to certain limitations which the Company's management believes should not have a material adverse impact on the Company's ability to sell and distribute such footwear.
Footwear lines marketed by the Company under the "Regulator" and "Gauge" names currently utilize such technology. The scope of the license includes patents currently held by Reebok and patents that might be issued to Reebok in foreign countries for the same technology. The license agreement does not, however, grant the Company access to Reebok's technology, its sources for components for inflatable systems, or its trademarks, trade dress or design elements. All other terms of the settlement, including the terms of the license agreement, are confidential.
Stanley P. Gold, Chairman of the Board of L.A. Gear, said, "We believe it is in the best interests of the Company and its shareholders to settle this lawsuit at this time. The settlement will minimize any disruption in our business and will allow the Company to avoid the costs and time demands of protracted litigation."
Mark R. Goldston, President of the Company, said, "We believe this settlement will allow us to continue to meet the expected remaining demand for our popular Regulator shoe which we introduced in 1990 and our newer Gauge shoes."
L.A. Gear, Inc. is a leading designer, developer and marketer of a broad range of quality athletic and casual/lifestyle footwear.
