L.A. GEAR ANNOUNCES LICENSING AGREEMENTS SIGNED WITH SWEATSHIRT

APPAREL, U.S.A.; STEINWURTZEL ACQUISITION AND COORDINATED APPAREL
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- L.A. Gear Inc. (NYSE: LA) announced today that it has entered into three licensing agreements with companies that will manufacture and distribute junior fashion knit active sportswear; men's, women's and children's basic solid knit activewear tops and bottoms; and men's big and tall active sportswear. The licensing agreements were entered into with Sweatshirt Apparel U.S.A., Steinwurtzel Acquisition Corp. and Coordinated Apparel Inc. (which operates American Argo), respectively.
According to L.A. Gear's President and Chief Operating Officer Mark R. Goldston, "We are pleased with the progress we are making in expanding the licensing opportunities of the company under the L.A. Gear Worldwide Properties Division. These new licensing agreements are another step toward increasing both the range and quality of non- footwear products that will be offered both domestically and internationally under the L.A. Gear brand name."
Sweatshirt Apparel U.S.A., the Guess Inc., junior-knitwear licensee, will manufacture and distribute a juniors line of fashion knit active sportswear under the L.A. Gear brand name.
That line consists of a collection of knit tops and bottoms, knit warm-ups and a line of screen-printed and embroidered T-shirt and sweatshirts. According to Michel Bittan, president of Sweatshirt Apparel U.S.A., "I am excited about the ability to reach this customer base with an exciting line of products under the widely recognized L.A. Gear brand name."
L.A. Gear entered into a licensing agreement under which Steinwurtzel Acquisition Corp. will produce and distribute basic solid knit activewear tops and bottoms for men, women and children. Elliott Lokitz, executive vice president/chief operating officer of Steinwurtzel Acquisition Corp., said, "This is a great opportunity for us to be associated with what we believe is one of the top athletic and fashion footwear brands."
The licensing agreement with Coordinated Apparel Inc. will allow for the production of a full line of men's big and tall active sportswear. The line is expected to be composed of basic and fashion knit tops and bottoms, screen prints, denim and woven pants, shorts and a full line of nylon warm-up suits. Ellen Constantinides, president of the American Argo Division of Coordinated Apparel Inc., said, "We see a tremendous opportunity for a brand name like L.A. Gear to penetrate the specialized big and tall market, which is demanding the type of fashion and styling that an L.A. Gear branded activewear line represents."
The American Argo line of L.A. Gear branded activewear will be available for viewing at the upcoming M.A.G.I.C. show in September and will be marketed exclusively by Mark Cohen of Extra Size Apparel Marketing.
Other L.A. Gear domestic licensees include Rio Sportswear Inc. (women's and girls' jeans, woven tops and bottoms); Accessory Network (sport bags); and Moretz Mills Inc. (athletic sockwear).
Domestic licensees of the L.A. Gear brand name for apparel products are primarily targeting athletic, department and specialty stores. The domestic-licensed collections, which are expected to be available at retail in spring 1993, should be available for viewing by the trade in early fall at either L.A. Gear's showroom at 1411 Broadway, 18th Floor, New York, N.Y., or in some cases, at the respective licensee's showroom.
L.A. Gear Inc. is a leading designer, developer and marketer of a broad range of quality athletic and casual/lifestyle footwear.
