L.A. COUNTY HEALTH SERVICES GETS BOOST
FROM HARD ROCK CAFES AND CENTINELA HOSPITAL
INGLEWOOD, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los Angeles County Health Services Department is the first to admit that it alone cannot properly immunize the county's young against the most common and preventable childhood diseases.
Aware of this unfortunate situation, due in part to budget cutbacks and the growing need for health care in Los Angeles' inner city, Hard Rock Cafes and Centinela Hospital Medical Center have teamed up for an aggressive mobile vaccination program.
A kick-off celebration for the inaugural stop of the Centinela Hospital/Hard Rock Cafe mobile vaccination van is planned for 10 a.m., Sept. 30, at Challengers Boys and Girls Club, 5029 S. Vermont Ave.
The program couldn't have come at a better time, according to the county's Health Department. A survey it conducted recently found that only 33 percent of the city's children by age 2 receive the basic recommended immunizations against such diseases as measles, mumps, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and rubella.
"County Health Services knows that without programs like the one sponsored by Hard Rock Cafes and Centinela Hospital we would fall way short of providing immunizations to certain populations," said Chuck Alexander, director of the county's immunization program which is supplying the vaccines. "We in the county applaud efforts in which private industry and a respected hospital work hand-in-hand in achieving good immunization levels within needy communities."
Alexander pointed out one reason why the number of unimmunized children is so high in the inner city.
"Health care is often low on the priority list when you consider housing, food and employment," he said. "Although people realize that health is important, often this area is neglected due to other basic needs."
The mobile vaccination van is personally designed in the Hard Rock Cafe motif and decorated with rock music memorabilia.
Vaccinations are free. No verification of income, citizenship of other documentation is required. Additional information on future vaccination locations is available by calling the Centinela Hospital Vaccination Hotline at 310-419-8633.
