The other day I asked Phil Liggett, the TV voice of the cycling as what Dick Button is to figure skating, how this Tour of California race actually ranked on the world stage of the sport.

He put it in the top five, just ahead of the Tour of Switzerland, with the Tour de France obviously No. 1.

Then, in his Wirral Peninsula accentt, he rattled off a couple of other races that I didn't quite catch before he got to figuring out in his mind where this nine-day, 800-mile event that's only a couple of years old now fits into the big picture.

Lance Armstrong arrives in Santa Clarita today. Liggett calls the Armstrong factor "debatable" to race interest, but said when he was at the Tour Down Under in Australia last month, there was a record turnout.

"It was unreal, they were beside themselves," Liggett said.
