 L. C. van WACHEM ELECTED TO IBM BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 ARMONK, N. Y., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- L. C. van Wachem, president of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and chairman of Shell Oil Company - USA, has been elected to the IBM (NYSE: IBM) board of directors.
 IBM Chairman John F. Akers said, "Lo van Wachem has had a long and distinguished career in international business. His expertise and breadth of experience will make him a valuable member of our board of directors. We welcome him to our board."
 Van Wachem began his career as a petroleum engineer for the Royal Dutch/Shell Group in 1953. He later held a variety of management and executive positions, and was elected managing director of Royal Dutch Petroleum in 1977. In 1979, he was elected a director of Shell Oil - USA, and in 1982 was elected chairman of Shell Oil - USA and president of Royal Dutch Petroleum. In 1985, van Wachem was elected chairman, committee of group managing directors, Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies. Van Wachem has announced his intention to retire as president of Royal Dutch Petroleum and chairman of Shell Oil - USA on June 30, at which time he will become chairman of the supervisory board, Royal Dutch Petroleum.
 Van Wachem, 60, was born in Indonesia and holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the Technological University of Delft, the Netherlands. He was named a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 1981 and an Honorary Knight of the Order of the British Empire in 1988.
