Kyprianou Caddy goes for ,e1/417,500.

A BLACK Cadillac, which over three decades ago served former President Spyros Kyprianou fetched e1/417,500 at a State Fair auction.

Its new owner is the cousin of former centre-right DIKO deputy Nicos Pitokopitis, Demetris Pittokipitis.

Since featuring news of the auction in the Cyprus Mail last week one reader informed the Cyprus Mail that he was in possession of a similar black Cadillac.

The 1990 Cyprus Rally winner Dimis Mavropoulos, sent in photos of an identical-looking Cadillac with a different registration number to the auctioned Kyprianou model. He claimed the Cadillac he has was the one used most by Kyprianou as apparently there were at least two state-used Cadillacs in addition to the one belonging to Archbishop Makarios III -- which was a gift from US President John F Kennedy and is on display at the Archbishopric in Nicosia.

Mavropoulos said the one he has is the bomb-proof and bullet-proof Cadillac most commonly used by Kyprianou, not the one put up for auction by the state.

The Cadillac model dates back to 1978, according to Mavropoulos who is a collector. Kyprianou served as President from 1977 to 1988 following the death of Makarios.

Kyprianou passed away in 2002.
