Kuwait coldstore serves practical needs of Middle East importers.

Based in Safat, about two kilometers from the port on the Arabian Gulf, Mabanee Logistica opened a new marble-paneled public refrigerated warehouse near Kuwait City on June 1 as a logistic hub for frozen, chilled and fresh foods between several European countries and the Middle East.

Most of the food is imported and arrives by reefer containers and trucks. Partly due to the logistics needs caused by the Iraq war, there is a huge demand for storage and distribution facilities in the Middle East, according to Theo van Sambeeck of ColdChainExperts. The Holland-headquartered consulting firm designed the $14 million facility and was involved in selection of materials handling systems.

"This first phase counts 15 docks and has a temperature controlled handling area of about 3,000 square meters," said Salem Al-Ali, CFA. "The 22,000 pallet positions are constructed on around 7,500 square meters and the temperatures range from deep frozen (-25[degrees]C), frozen (-18[degrees]C), chilled (+2[degrees]C to +8[degrees]C) to ambient (+15[degrees]C)."

However, in order to be flexible, most of the rooms are convertible. Upon completion of the third phase of the project, there will be approximately 60,000 pallet positions available for storage, order picking and cross docking activities. By then, the distribution center will be part of a fancy shopping area, so the outside is covered with grey, Italian marble--something unusual for a coldstore.

"Almost 95% of the space is equipped with mobile racks and two separated, two-way conveyor belt systems that bridge the distances in the warehouse and take the pallets to the different rooms," pointed out Mishaal Al Usaimi, assistant general manager for Mabanee Company, parent of Mabanee Logistics.

"This system enables us to separate in the daily operation the loading and unloading from putting away goods and order preparation," he added. "It also avoids heavy lift truck traffic in the aisles and it takes just a few seconds to get the pallets behind the door into the cold environment."

Engineering and construction management was in the hands of ColdChainExperts' Dutch partner in this project, RBK Engineering. Mabanee Company is involved in commercial real estate development, such as the largest shopping mall in Kuwait, warehouses and other commercial buildings.
