Kurien stops Verma to win men's singles title.

Byline: Mohita whips Sangeetha for women's crown.

Dubai: Thomas Kurien dug deep into his experience to stop young Sourabh Verma and emerge the men's singles champion in India Club-Western Union UAE Open Badminton.

In a well-fought final at the India Club court, Kurien, ranked 33 in India, beat rising star Verma, ranked No 3 among India's under-19 juniors, 15-21, 21-12, 21-14.

Verma, a student of the Gopichand Academy, Hyderabad, got off to promising start, winning the first set 15-21. However, he could not stop a determined Kurien who had lost in the semifinals last year.

The women's singles final turned out to be a one-sided match with Mohita Sahdev, who had represented India in World University Games, scoring a 21-4, 21-10 victory over Sangeetha Rajagopalan.

Sangeetha failed to live up to her reputation of having played in World Masters in Australia and also the World Championships in Bulgaria, Malaysia and Taipei.

It was a bad day for Sangeetha as she lost the women's doubles final too, partnering Monica Bhonwal. Abu Dhabi's Anjela Thomas Aloor with Bahrain's Jayashree Nair won the title 18-21, 21-6, 21-12.

The men's doubles turned out to be a shocker for India's No 1-ranked players, Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar. Diju Valiyaveetil and Jaspeel Esmail, ranked No 2, won the title 21-18, 21-15.
