Koch Environmental helps local optics companies with testing.

Byline: Gino Fanelli

Run by the father son team of Jeff and Jake Koch, Koch Environmental hasachieved test chamber calibration accreditation ISO/IEC 17025:2005, an accreditation which will further expand their work with local optics companies.

Based in Hilton, Koch Environmental is a company that provides environmental test chambers for companies, specifically in the defense, photonics and optics industries, including Rochester Precision Optics and Optimax. Those tests can help find design flaws in new products by subjecting them to thermal shock, high and low temperatures, high altitudes and other inclement conditions.

"It's more prevalent than I might think. A lot of companies in the Rochester area have test chambers of some kind: manufacturers, a lot of companies in optics and photonics, aerospace, defense, high tech manufacturing," said Jeff Koch. "If they have an internal quality process, they probably have a test chamber to simulate conditions during the engineering process before they put a product into market. That's where these systems live and that's what we support."

The new accreditation ensures Koch Environmental's ability to calibrate systems to precisely match the environmental conditions being tested.

"Our procedures ensure that the test chambers create the desired conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude and vibration)." Koch said. "Accredited calibrations mitigate risk for our clients, and ensure instrument accuracy and traceability."

A small firm, Koch Environmental employs five people at its Hilton headquarters. The elder Koch has worked with the photonics industry since 1977.

"Too often, companies reach beyond their core competencies. We believe there is greater value in specialization, especially when it comes to high precision markets like optics and photonics," Koch said in a statement. "Achieving ISO accreditation is an important validation for us and for the clients we serve. It gives our customers proof in the quality of the data and helps them document exceedingly stringent requirements." 653-4022
