Know your Vice President. (Division Report: Guidance).

Judy Petersen is in her second year as ACTE Guidance Division Vice President. She has long been an advocate for career and technical education, specifically in the guidance arena. Petersen has served in ACTE leadership since 1995 when she became a member of the Guidance Division Policy Committee.

Petersen began as a guidance counselor at Kearns High School in Granite School District in Salt Lake City in 1986. She served as the State Specialist for Counseling and Career Development from 1993-1998 and is currently a coordinator for secondary comprehensive counseling and guidance in Granite School District. In her spare time, she teaches in the master's school counseling program at Utah State University.

Petersen is a strong advocate for comprehensive counseling and guidance programs. She is committed to a programmatic approach to providing direct services to all students in a school through guidance curriculum, individual planning and responsive services. She recognizes and supports efforts nationwide for states, district and schools to implement comprehensive school guidance programs.

Under Petersen's leadership, the Guidance Division Policy Committee met as part of the 2001 ACTE Convention and has made a commitment to "Celebrate the Past, Plan for the Future" by focusing on the critical needs of counseling and career development nationwide. The policy committee recognizes a critical need for legislation for counseling and career development, and a need to recruit potential counselors, mentor new counseling and career development leaders, develop a richer Web site, and provide better ways of communicating to counseling and career development professionals.
