Knife gang's victim in fight for life.
Both men were stabbed after shouting at thugs who spat on them from a footbridge.
The youngsters - some of them girls - screamed obscenities as they chased their victims through the streets.
They beat the men, aged 20 and 21, to the ground before stabbing one man in the chest and thighs.
He suffered head injuries as he was repeatedly stamped on in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The other man - who was stabbed in the buttocks - had a wrist shattered by a kick.
A police source said: "It was an incredibly violent attack and came out of the blue. At least one of the victims is lucky to be alive.
"He was stamped on and stabbed in an extremely brutal way. It was well beyond your average fight."
Police appealed for witnesses to the assaults, on Hailesland Road in Edinburgh at 1.25am.
Passing traffic scared the gang off as people hooted their car horns at them.
A police spokeswoman said: "This was a violent and unprovoked attack on two men who suffered fairly serious injuries after being beaten up by a group of teens.
"Fortunately, they were eventually scared off but not before the men were hurt.
"Anyone with information about the culprits is asked to contact police."
