Knife crackdown; view Your.

WHILE I welcome any initiative to try to reduce the scourge of knife crime, I feel the key phrases in Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland's new guidelines are "sentences up to four years" and "hot spots".

Firstly, will judges readily impose the maximum penalty considering our prisons are already overflowing? And secondly, why will the tougher approach only apply to certain areas? No, I feel this is another missed opportunity to give the law real teeth.

Alex Beveridge, Cumbernauld, near Glasgow ... I WELCOME the new crackdown on knife crime and the fact that justice secretary Kenny MacAskill seems to have finally given upon his softly-softly approach.

Long sentences have been proven to work in the past, like when they stopped the Glasgow razor gangs in the Fifties.
