Kitchens and Bathrooms: Planning and Remodeling.

In the 32 years since the ATA-Sunset Western Home Awards program began, perhaps no rooms in the house have changed more radically than kitchens and bathrooms. The presentation of the 195758 winners included pictures of only three kitchens (each almost primitive by today's standards) and no bathrooms. The article on this year's winners includes pictures of about a dozen kitchens and three baths.

Beyond the fact that they've changed dramatically, the two rooms have much else in common: typically they're the only spaces in the house that use plumbing; they're the most expensive to build or remodel; and, partly because they're built around large appliances that wear out and become outmoded, they're the rooms that get remodeled most often.

Only recently has the role of the bathroom begun to expand (often meaning an expansion in dimensions, as well). Today, it may be a place for soaking in a spa, gazing at a private garden view, or displaying indoor plants.

Kitchens, too, have opened up, often merging with dining and living areas. More storage is needed for today's many new kinds of appliances, and storage units look more open than they once did.

A year ago, Sunset combined two of its best-selling home improvement books: Kitchens: Planning & Remodeling (first published in 1955, revised five times, and the top seller), and Bathrooms: Planning & Remodeling (first published in 1963, revised four times, and the number four seller). Kitchens & Bathrooms: Planning & Remodeling sells for $12.95. Individually, either of tbe components is $7.95.
