Kiremko munches more on potato snack food and flake business.

With the frozen potato and vegetable sector generally coping with stress in Europe due to structural over capacity, Kiremko BV continues to place more of its "chips" on the snack foods table.

Within the last year or so the equipment company has engineered and installed a new potato and tortilla chips factory--complete with a Kiremko frying line--in Harlingen, Texas, as well as a pellet frying system for a potato flake producer in China. It has also put in a new frying line plus a peeling, sorting, cutting and blanching system for a potato chips manufacturer in Belgium.

"The snack market has become much more important for us, as investment in the french fry sector in Europe has slowed down," said Paul Oosterlaken, director of the Montfoort, Holland-headquartered firm.

But the frozen food market continues to grow in South America--especially in Brazil and Argentina, where Arjan Brouwer is responsible for sales. The son of Kiremko founder Peter Brouwer relinquished his executive managerial role after the company was sold at the end of 2003.

Oosterlaken, whose Kiremko career began as a junior draftsman in 1976, took over the company with Andy Gowing in January of 2004. His partner runs the UK office in Doncaster, England.

Kiremko's strategic alliance with Idaho Steel Products in the USA remains solidly intact. "We have had good cooperation for many years, working closely with them in the United States and other countries such as China," said Oosterlaken.

Spanning the globe with its reach, Kiremko continues to service longtime customers while also prospecting for new opportunities. "Our business is steady in Japan, where we have supplied 25 small-capacity steam peelers to potato salad makers," said the director. "Elsewhere, we have installed pellet frying lines to customers in Saudi Arabia, Iran and France, while new chip lines have been set up in Russia and Iran."
