Kerrygold invests in grating.

As part of the capital investment programme at its high-tech, modern factory in Staffordshire, the Kerrygold Co is producing grated cheese for the manufacturing, wholesale and retail market sectors.

The company is one of the UK's largest independent cheese packers and makers of processed cheese. Each year the company handles more than 34,000 tonnes of cheese in its packing hall, the majority of which is cut to meet individual customers' weight requirements.

Having identified the growing UK demand for grated cheese and the different needs for cheese in the marketplace, the grating facility has enabled Kerrygold to capitalise on a major opportunity to enter into this added-value sector of the market.

Brendan Doyle, head of marketing, says: "Production of grated cheese is a compatible extension to our mainstream prepacked cheese operation. The similar customer base provides us with opportunities for improving efficiency in production, sales and distribution."

The company views its move into prepacked grated cheese as a natural marketing progression, introducing a new product for the supermarkets' prepacked cheese chilled cabinets.

Brendan Doyle explains "As well as the extensive industrial market for grated cheese, which includes manufacturers of sandwiches, pizzas, frozen and chilled meals and the catering sector for pubs and restaurants, there is now a growing and discernible demand for this product through the retail trade. Consumers are using more sophisticated cookery techniques and are wanting products to cater for this culinary trend. The launch of a Kerrygold brand of grated cheese into supermarkets is introducing a premium product and making it available to all consumers."

"Foods that are normally bought out of the home can just as easily be prepared in the home - grated cheese has capitalised on this market opportunity, enabling foods, such as pizzas, pasta, filled jacket potatoes, etc, to be made quickly and easily at home." he added.

Kerrygold will be marketing a range of grated cheeses, including mature cheddar, a blend of mozzarella and cheddar, and mozzarella on its own. In addition, it will be blending different cheeses to meet the taste specification of individual customers, particularly in the growing industrial and food manufacturing market.

As well as grated cheese, processed cheese slices also make for easier preparation of foods, both for manufacturers and in catering outlets. Kerrygold produces a range of cheese slices available in catering packs of 36 sandwich and 12 multi-purpose slices - made from Kerrygold cheddar cheese.
