KENYON, Sherrilyn. Dark side of the moon. (A Dark-Hunter Novel.) Read by Maggi-Meg Reed. Abridged. 4 cds. 5 hrs. Audio Renaissance. 2006. 1-59397-901-0. $19.95. Cardboard; plot, author notes. SA

Abridgment works well with this paranormal romance as it distills the story to its key elements, focusing on discovering why humans are in league with the Daimons. We hear Nick Gautier's fateful confrontation with Acheron. We hear Ravyn reconciling with his family and falling in love with another human. Sex, in-depth character development and long-term plot development are absent. Abridged narrator Reed has the snide sarcasm down pat. She presents a strong Susan and a definite romantic lead in Ravyn. In contrast, unabridged narrator MacDuffie tries to add a bit too much character to the characters without having full knowledge of what had gone before. Acheron, the ultimate hero, sounds like a bad Italian Mafioso. Though MacDuffie has no problem with fast thinking, fast-talking Susan, preconceived notions of the established secondary characters make certain accents hard to reconcile. High schools who purchase the abridgment will definitely provoke interest in Kenyon's backlist and Greek mythology in general. Public libraries can buy either with confidence. Both retain the critical plot information required for the next book. Jodi L. Israel, MLS, Salt Lake City, UT
