Kellogg, Engelhard and United Catalysts Inc. Form Alliance to Offer Advanced Ammonia Catalyst and Technologies

HOUSTON, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The M.W. Kellogg Technology Company, Engelhard Corporation and United Catalysts Inc., a member of the Sud-Chemie Group, announced formation of an alliance to market and provide technical services for the breakthrough catalyst used in the Kellogg Advanced Ammonia Process (KAAP).

Under the terms of the agreement, Engelhard remains the exclusive manufacturer of the KAAP catalyst. United Catalysts Inc. (UCI) and its Sud- Chemie Group affiliated companies will be the exclusive marketer of the catalyst to existing and potential KAAP licensees worldwide. In addition, UCI will provide technical services for all KAAP catalysts supplied by the alliance, including those in existing KAAP plants. Kellogg, owner of the KAAP technology, will continue its role as licensor.

KAAP is the innovation responsible for the "new generation" of advanced ammonia plants. It provides plant operators with improved energy efficiency and lower installed and operating costs for both new and retrofit plants. The KAAP catalyst exhibits an activity of up to 20 times that of magnetite. Its performance is maintained at high ammonia concentrations and over a wide range of hydrogen-to-nitrogen ratios.

"We expect this alliance to allow Kellogg to better serve our clients' needs," said Dr. Eric Moorehead, president of The M.W. Kellogg Technology Company. "It allows our three companies to work together to provide clients with greater value. This advanced ammonia technology provides significant benefits to ammonia producers, whether they are considering revamping an existing facility or building a grassroots plant."

"For Engelhard, the alliance represents a deepening of our existing alliance relationship with Kellogg, as the exclusive manufacturer and supplier of the catalyst," said Jim Martin, vice president and general manager, Engelhard's Chemical Catalysts Group. "With the addition of United Catalysts Inc. to the alliance, we're able to focus more on improving catalyst performance and manufacturing protocols. This way, customers receive improved efficiencies, as well as improved sales and technical service through the UCI network."

"For our part," added Bert Knight, UCI's president and chief executive officer, "this exclusive alliance means we can offer a greatly enhanced 'total catalyst and technology package' to ammonia producers. It's an alliance designed to benefit the producers."
