Keep a close eye on Monitor.

WHILE Sea The Stars was something of a certainty in yesterday's big race at York, it was harder to envisage the 28-1 success of Monitor Closely in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Peter Chapple-Hyam's colt had been highlytried earlier in the season but appeared a revelation over a longer trip as he dented some big reputations by making all the running.

Jimmy Fortune gradually turned the screw and Monitor Closely stretched right away in the final furlong to score by four and a half lengths.

He is now only 6-1 with sponsors Ladbrokes for the St Leger. Mastery filled the runner-up spot with Father Time back in third, a long way ahead of disappointments Alwaary and 13-8 favourite Harbinger.
