Kanga rues ocean dip.

Summary: A surfer has saved it from drowning at Kirra Beach along the Gold Coast.

An Australian man has staged a daring rescue to pluck a drowning kangaroo from the sea.

Neil McCallum leaped into action after spotting the panicked animal being dragged out into the surf by a riptide on the Gold Coast's Kirra Beach.

The part-time surfer ran home and grabbed his board, sparing only enough time to tell his wife what was happening before heading back to the beach and plunging into the sea.

His wife Amanda, still dressed in her pyjamas, went along and captured the entire rescue on camera.

The 48-year-old business speaker eventually shepherded the frightened animal back to the shore before it bounded off.

Mr McCallum said he had never seen a kangaroo around Kirra, a built-up suburb about 12 miles south of Queensland's Surfers Paradise, although reports of swimming kangaroos elsewhere are not unusual.
