Kaiser Permanente Southern California Medical Centers Recognized as "Top Hospitals" in the Nation.

PASADENA, Calif. -- Seven Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals have been named 2012 "Top Hospitals" by The Leapfrog Group. The designation is the gold standard for comparing hospitals' performance across all areas of quality and patient safety. Out of nearly 1,200 hospitals participating in The Leapfrog Group's annual survey, only 92 hospitals were named "Top Hospitals."

"Providing high-quality health care has been, is, and always will be our highest priority and greatest aspiration. We are committed to the total health of our members, and to ensuring their safety when they are entrusted to our care. This honor recognizes the hard work of our physicians and staff to enhance care delivery and improve the health of our members and the communities we serve," said Edward M. Ellison, MD, executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. "Kaiser Permanente's electronic medical record system, physician staffing at all our intensive care units, and the highest standards for high-risk procedures enable us to consistently attain high marks from prestigious organizations like The Leapfrog Group."

The 2012 "Top Hospital" list is made up of three categories of hospitals: urban, rural, and children's hospitals. To make the "Top Hospital" list, facilities must deliver the highest quality care by preventing medication errors, reducing mortality for high-risk procedures such as heart bypass surgery, maintaining proper intensive care unit staffing with physicians trained in critical care medicine, and overall high safety scores.

"The Leapfrog 'Top Hospital' distinction is by far the most competitive award a hospital can receive," said Leah Binder, president & CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Kaiser Permanente's 2012 "Top Hospitals" in Southern California are: Fontana, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, South Bay, West Los Angeles, and Woodland Hills. This year, Leapfrog added the A-grade on the Hospital Safety Score as a requirement to achieve "Top Hospital" for hospitals that were eligible for a safety score.

The Leapfrog Group reissued its Hospital Safety Score(SM) last week and Kaiser Permanente Southern California did exceptionally well. The hospitals with an "A" for patient safety were: Anaheim, Baldwin Park, Downey, Fontana, Irvine, Los Angeles, Moreno Valley, Panorama City, Riverside, San Diego, South Bay, West Los Angeles, and Woodland Hills. The Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center was not included in the survey since it recently opened its doors to the public.

The Kaiser Permanente "Top Hospitals" in Northern California are: Antioch, Richmond, Roseville, San Francisco, Santa Clara, South Sacramento, South San Francisco, Vacaville, Vallejo, and Walnut Creek.

The Leapfrog survey focuses on how patients fare, resources used to care for patients, and management practices that promote safety and quality. The complete list of the 2012 Leapfrog "Top Hospitals" is posted on
