MUSCAT | Kabaddi, a sport associated with the Subcontinent, will certainly be the star attraction of the 2nd Asian Beach Games to be held in Muscat in December this year.

Eoe1/4EoThis is the game which attracted the maximum spectators and was only next to beach volleyball in the first edition at Bali,Eoe1/4A[yen] said E. Prasad Rao, a Dronacharya awardee and the technical director of the Asian Amateur Kabaddi Federation, who is on a visit to Oman.

Prasad needs no introduction to the sport of kabaddi as he is the person responsible for laying out the game during the Asian Games held in Doha.

Prasad Rao held a meeting with the MABGOC Director General Habib bin Abdulnabi Macki to sort out a couple of issues on the competitions front.

The main issue was to finalise the venue for the game. Eoe1/4EoWe have short listed two sites within the city limits one which will be situated in Seeb near the Wave and the other not yet finalised.Eoe1/4A[yen]

As in Bali, where the game saw ticket sales breaking all records, Prasad feels that it will be better followed in Muscat, which has a large expatriate population.Eoe1/4EoI am glad to see the Oman national kabaddi team making tremendous progress despite its formation just three months ago.Eoe1/4A[yen]

According to Prasad Rao, Kabaddi is being played by around 31 countries all over the world, and as we all know that it is the most popular team game held in India as it does not require any expense whatsoever, it can be played at the drop of a hat at any place any time.

Kabaddi was the only sport which won the numbers game when it was held at the Indoor Asain Games in Vietnam and today it is played as a regular sport. Kabaddi is now played in all the continents which is the criteria for any Olympic sport at the moment 32 countries are playing the game which we plan to raise to 50 and then we can reach the Olympics. He added in Milan in 2009 they held the European Championships where teams from Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden took part it was held indoors and the United Kingdom won the championships with Italy taking the runners up spot.

Eoe1/4EoBeing a South Asain sport it caters to both the developed and underdeveloped countries even in the West Indies, which is a country that only plays cricket, the response was upbeat when the game was introduced to them and they quickly adopted the game,Eoe1/4A[yen] said Prasad.

Regarding the progress of the sport in Oman, he went on to add that as the head of the Asian Kabaddi Federation, he would be glad to hold a joint training camp in India if it would do any good for the Oman national team. He said that in the menEoe1/4aos category there are 12 teams and in the womenEoe1/4aos category there are 10 teams.

Before signing off Prasad said that by July the venues will be finalised and there will also be some test events between the top Asian teams.
