Pop princess Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her management company revealed the sad news today, sending shock waves through her thousands of fans worldwide.

The singer, whose mother Carol is from Maesteg and whose family ran the post office there, was given the diagnosis while back home in Melbourne with her parents. She has cancelled her sell-out tour of Australia and will undergo immediate treatment, her touring company has said.

Kylie, who will be 37 later this month and has always remained proud of her Maesteg roots - even suggesting she would have made a good postmistress there - said: 'I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences and am sorry to have to disappoint my fans.

'Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon.'

Welsh fans have been left shocked by the news and cancer sufferers have offered the star their support.

'It's shocking news. I had no idea,' said recovering cancer sufferer Nicola Williams, of Spencer Street, Cathays, who was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 28 and working as fire service human resources officer.

'When I was diagnosed it was devastating and surreal. You think that's the end of everything but you can come through it. I had two operations and chemotherapy. You need to set yourself small goals, whether it's a meal with your friends or a holiday and your family help you.'

Her boyfriend, Kylie fan Julian Saunders, 32, said: 'This will be a huge shock to fans. I've liked Kylie as long as I can remember.

'It takes a lot of care and love to help someone through cancer and I'm sure her family and all her fans will be there for her.'

Kylie's management said the diagnosis was confirmed this week during a visit to Melbourne and said: 'While at home in Melbourne with her family this week prior to her Australian Showgirl Tour, Kylie was diagnosed with early breast cancer.'

The singer has already taken the Showgirl tour around the UK and Europe and was due to perform across Australia next month.

Dancer and Kylie fan Michelle Sheehan, 22, of Culverhouse Cross, said: 'People will be so shocked, everyone loves Kylie. '
