KUBOTA CORP. REPORTS RESULTS OF OPERATIONS FOR THE FIRST SIX MONTHS ENDED SEPT. 30, 1993

OSAKA, Japan, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Kubota Corp., Japan's leading manufacturer of farm equipment, pipes, industrial machinery and building materials, announced on Friday it posted 449.8 billion yen consolidated sales for April-September, up 3.6 percent, or 15.5 billion yen, from a year earlier.
The sales rise for the first six months of fiscal 1993 that will end on March 31 was attributable to growing orders in the housing-related sector following recovery in the number of housing constructions in the wake of falling domestic interest rates, company officials said.
Meanwhile, sales in machinery, pipe systems, secondarily processed materials and environment-related facilities shrank in the period, reflecting a sharp drop in private corporate investment and sluggish consumer spending as well as the yen's surge.
Domestic sales rose 3.4 percent, or 12.0 billion yen, for the first half of the current business year to 362.3 billion yen.
As for sales in overseas, they grew 4.2 percent, or 3.5 billion yen, from the same period in 1992 to 87.5 billion yen. As a result, the proportion of overseas sales to the overall sales jumped by 10.2 percentage points to 19.5 percent. The increase in the number of Kubota's consolidated firms partly helped push up the total sales.
Concerning operating profit on a consolidated basis, it advanced 24.2 percent, or 2.920 million yen, for the first six months of fiscal 1993 to 14,991 million yen.
However, consolidated net income at 1,573 million yen for the six months, declining 25.5 percent or 538 million yen, damaged by a drop in other income due mainly to foreign currency exchange losses brought by yen's appreciation.
As a result, net income per ADS reached to 22 yen on a consolidated basis, dropping 8 yen from a year earlier.
