KROGER EXTENDS PACT WITH SPRINT; NEW THREE-YEAR DEAL WORTH ESTIMATED $10 MILLION

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) has renewed and expanded its contract for telecommunications services, inking a three-year deal worth an estimated $10 million.
The contract gives Sprint the task of handling more than 95 percent of the voice telephone traffic at Kroger, which is the nation's largest retail food store. Kroger is using Sprint's Virtual Private Network product to link all Kroger locations in the United States and also to provide outbound voice services for international calling.
The new agreement extends Sprint's role in carrying Kroger's voice traffic while adding a small data transmission component. Kroger operates more than 1,280 stores around the country, all of them now linked to each other and to headquarters through the Sprint network.
"Any company in our business is after new customers, but serving and keeping our current customers is even more critical," said Kevin E. Brauer, president of Sprint's Business Market Group.
"Kroger is a household name that's recognized for its quality, and we view this renewal as a real vote of confidence. After all, the retail food industry is an intensely competitive industry, and they can't take any chances on the reliability of their phone service." Kroger, based in Cincinnati and founded in 1883, operates supermarkets and convenience stores in 24 states. Kroger also operates food processing units that provide the supermarkets with a broad variety of private label products. Sales in 1992 totaled $22.9 billion.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services; local telephone services to more than 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular services to 42 major metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
