KOVACEVICH JOINS FINGERHUT BOARD

 MINNEAPOLIS, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ted Deikel, chairman and CEO of Fingerhut Companies, Inc. (NYSE: FHT) today announced that Richard M. Kovacevich has joined the board of directors of Fingerhut Companies, Inc. Kovacevich, age 49, is president and CEO of Norwest Corporation.
 "Dick will be a significant contributor to Fingerhut's growth plans, said Deikel. "As CEO of a $46 billion nationwide banking and consumer services business, he brings a new dimension to the board which will be especially valuable as we develop new financial service products for our customer base."
 Kovacevich joined Norwest as vice chairman and COO in 1986 and was named to his current position on Jan. 1, 1993. Before joining Norwest, Kovacevich was group executive and member of the policy committee of Citicorp. Previously, he was in charge of Citibank USA, including its nationwide MasterCard and Visa Division and the New York City Banking Division. He began his career at General Mills as a planner, then moving to mergers and acquisitions and finally serving as division manager.
 Fingerhut Companies, Inc., one of the nation's largest catalog marketing companies, sells brand name and private label merchandise primarily through direct mail to an active base of more than 13 million customers.
