KOREAN AIR SELECTS ADDITIONAL PRATT & WHITNEY PW4000S
EAST HARTFORD, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Korean Air, the flag carrier of the Republic of Korea, has selected the Pratt & Whitney PW4056 engine to power seven Boeing 747-400 aircraft recently added to the airline's firm fleet plan.
The order is for 28 firm installed and 11 spare engines for the additional 747-400s worth an estimated $270 million. Korean Air has now ordered some 170 PW4000 engines for its fleet of 747-400s, Airbus A300-600s and McDonnell Douglas MD-11s.
Among the world's fastest-growing airlines, Korean Air serves 44 cities in 26 countries and will operate a fleet of 120 aircraft by the end of the decade.
"Korean Air is certainly one of Asia's leading airlines," said William Raabe, vice president marketing for Pratt & Whitney. "We are pleased our long-term relationship is continuing. We value Korean Air's support for the PW4000 engine family."
The PW4000 family has been selected by some 60 airlines to power models of all the current generation of wide-body airliners and is the launch engine for the new Boeing 777. Current PW4000s with a 94-inch fan range in thrust from 50,000 to 62,000 pounds. At test is a 100-inch fan version of the engine producing between 68,000 and 75,000 pounds of thrust. It will enter service on the Airbus A330 in 1994.
A 112-inch fan version capable of more than 90,000 pounds of thrust will begin tests later this year. It is slated for introduction into service on the Boeing 777 in 1995. Future models under study could produce over 100,000 pounds of thrust should that be required.
