KOREAN AIR ORDERS TWO MORE MD-80 TWIN JETS

LONG BEACH, Calif. Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Korean Air, the national airline of Korea, has ordered two more McDonnell Douglas MD-80 twin- engine airliners for its fleet.
The order was announced today in Seoul by Korean Air President and Chief Executive Y.H. Cho. The new aircraft will be delivered in July 1995. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Korean Air has operated MD-80s on its short- and medium-range routes within Korea since 1985, and now has nine of the twin jets in service, including one delivered in September. One more is in final assembly, for delivery later this year.
Like those now in operation, the newly ordered aircraft will be MD-82 models equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217C engines, each rated for 20,000 pounds of takeoff thrust. They will seat up to 164 passengers in an all-economy class arrangement.
The airline ordered latest-technology cockpit features, including an electronic flight instrument system with all solid-state digital engine controls, a digital flight management system and dual inertial reference systems for navigation.
Data through June of this year show that Korean Air has built a record of more than 103,000 flights with its present MD-80 fleet, and more than 76,000 flight hours. The average flight duration is less than 45 minutes, but average daily utilization is near five hours for each aircraft, demonstrating the MD-80's high reliability in the airline's short-hop service.
In addition to the MD-80s, Korean Air's fleet includes three McDonnell Douglas DC-10s and five MD-11 trijet transports operated on its long-range international routes.
