KOREA/HANARO TELECOM SELECT CONEXANT-BASED ADSL MODEMS.

Korea Telecom and Hanaro Telecom have selected Conexant-based Ethernet asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) modems for use in their networks.

Korea Telecom and Hanaro Telecom are the two largest telecommunications and service providers in Korea.

ADSL uses existing phone company lines to send high-speed digital signals. There are ADSL modems at both ends of the transmission -- on the customer premises equipment (CPE) side and the telephone company central office side, through a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM).

ADSL provides the next step in enhanced Internet access over telephone lines, with increased speed, an always-on connection and both voice and data sharing the same line. MAC System Co. Ltd., one of the leading manufacturers of multimedia and communication products in Korea, will be handling the deployment of the modems.

"Approval of MAC Systems' Ethernet product on Korea Telecom and Hanaro networks is a testimonial to the broad interoperability and performance of our ADSL technology," said Chee Kwan, vice president of broadband products for Conexant's Personal Computing division.

"These two leading service providers continue to install several types of DSLAM equipment on their network and our ADSL technology is poised for even broader deployment in Korea."

"Our competitive edge and interoperability make this a great product for Korea Telecom and Hanaro Telecom networks," said Jay Cho, director of sales and marketing for MAC Systems Co. Ltd.

"We're proud to work with Conexant on delivering cost-effective Ethernet-based solutions. We plan to leverage Conexant's portfolio of broadband and networking solutions to provide a full range of products for this dynamic market."

According to UBS Warburg's Korea Telecom Sector Update, 16.6 percent of the total population or 52 percent of all Korean households had broadband access at the end of 2001. Total broadband subscribers at the end of 2001 amounted to 7.8 million with a year-end 2002 outlook estimate of 9.7 million subscribers.
