KOMAG'S MEDIA MANUFACTURING AND DEVELOPMENT SITES RECOGNIZED WITH ISO 9001 REGISTRATION

MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Komag Inc. (NASDAQ: KMAG), a leading supplier of thin-film components for high-performance Winchester disk drives, announced that all of its U.S. media manufacturing and development sites have been awarded the ISO 9001 quality system standard.
"Komag's corporate mission statement is: 'Survival through continuous improvement. Success through innovation.' By undertaking these goals, we have created an organization that encourages continuous improvement at all levels in the company along the principles of the noted quality expert W.E. Deming. By adhering to this mission statement, we have grown to become the world's largest media manufacturer and one of the first in our industry to receive the ISO 9001 quality system registration," said Stephen C. Johnson, president and chief executive officer at Komag Inc.
In addition to Komag's U.S. disk operations, ISO registration is expected early next year at Komag's new production facility in Penang, Malaysia and at Asahi Komag Co. Ltd., the company's Japanese disk manufacturing joint venture.
Defined as an "international quality standard" for quality management systems, ISO 9000 describes basic elements that must be included in a company's quality management system. Categories within the ISO 9000 series include ISO 9001, the model for quality assurance (QA) in design/development, production, installation and servicing; ISO 9002, the model for QA in production and installation; and ISO 9003, the model for QA in final inspection and test. The ISO 9000 standard was published in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is currently endorsed by over 50 countries as an international standard.
Founded in 1983, Komag is the world's largest manufacturer of computer hard disks. Komag and its consolidated subsidiaries maintain 870,000 square feet of manufacturing and administrative space in California and Malaysia, and employ approximately 3,600 people. Komag also manufactures and sells thin-film disk products through an unconsolidated subsidiary, Asahi Komag Co. Ltd., which is among the top three media producers in Japan.
