KODAK TO CONTINUE SUPPORT OF MOTION PICTURE DIGITAL SOUND
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Although Optical Radiation Corporation, with whom Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) worked to develop Cinema Digital Sound (CDS), has curtailed it's CDS activities, Kodak will remain supportive of the digital sound process.
Joe Macaluso, Kodak's Coordinator of Markets Development for Cinema Digital Sound said "We are disappointed to learn of ORC's decision. We continue to have interest in digital sound in the movies and our work to make that happen will continue. Cinema Digital Sound has proven to be a very high quality, reliable system. We will continue to pursue efforts to get digital sound into theaters."
CDS was launched in Hollywood in May, 1990. To date, since the format first appeared on the sound track of "Dick Tracy", the system has been utilized on eight major films including: FLATLINERS, THE DOORS, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY. Worldwide, 55 theaters feature CDS installations. The format has shown significant box office strength in both the U.S. and Europe where films utilizing the system have often outgrossed the analog competition by a 2 to 1 margin.
