KODAK REDUCES PRICES OF CONSUMER PHOTO CD PLAYERS

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) announced at the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show today that it will immediately reduce the suggested retail prices of its Photo CD players. The new manufacturers' suggested retail prices are:
 -- Model PCD 270 -- Entry-level, single-disc audio/Photo CD player--$379
 -- Model PCD 870--Fully-featured, single-disc audio/Photo CD player--$449
 -- Model PCD 5870-- Fully-featured, five-disc audio/Photo CD player--$549
The full process of introducing Kodak Photo CD players and Photo CD transfer services to the United States market took place between June and Christmas of 1992. Consumer Photo CD advertising commenced in October 1992. The marketing thrust, introduced during that period, continues throughout 1993, and the entire consumer launch of the Photo CD system is an 18-month campaign.
"We are pleased with the Photo CD player and transfer service distribution we have achieved in the U.S.," said Michael P. Morley, vice president and general manager, U.S. and Canada Region, Consumer Imaging, at Kodak. "Our U.S. Photo CD dealers and photofinishers report an excellent mix of player and transfer sales to consumers and commercial users. The ratio of Photo CD player sales per dealer demonstration exceeds our expectations."
It is customary in the consumer electronics business for product prices to be reduced following the launch of new product categories. This happens as manufacturing efficiency improves with increased sales volume, more manufacturers become involved in the product category, and competitive products are marketed at lower prices.
"Kodak is taking the opportunity of the Winter 1993 CES, where its major U.S. Photo CD dealers will be gathered, to reduce the price of its Photo CD player line in the U.S. market," Morley explained. "A positive effect of this price reduction will be to reduce the price gap between audio CD players with similar features, and the equivalent Photo CD compatible players, making Kodak Photo CD players more affordable even to first-time CD buyers."
Kodak Photo CD players display photographic-quality images to TV, and play audio CDs to stereo systems. To use the Photo CD system, consumers take pictures with their normal 35 mm cameras. They can get their 35 mm color or black-and-white negatives or transparencies transferred to Photo CD discs at photofinishers throughout the U.S. A typical cost to process a 24-exposure roll of 35 mm color negative film, and have it transferred to a Photo CD disc is $20.
Consumers can call 800-846-2200 to request literature, a 20-minute demonstration video, and a list of retailers for Kodak Photo CD products.
