KODAK RECEIVES PATENT IN JAPAN FOR MAGNETIC RECORDING DEVICE

ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to press inquiries, Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) confirmed today it has received a decision from the Japanese patent office granting a patent for a magnetic recording system invented by Kodak which utilizes a record head with a small effective magnetic gap length.
"We view the decision to grant the patent as another example of Kodak's strength in research and innovation," said Kay R. Whitmore, Kodak chairman, president and chief executive officer. Last year, Kodak was the seventh largest recipient of patents issued by the U.S. Patent Office to all companies worldwide. Earlier this year, Kodak filed a patent infringement suit against Sony Corporation and Sony Corporation of America based on a U.S. patent pertaining to magnetic recording devices with recording heads featuring a magnetic gap of 0.38 microns or less. The Kodak patent in Japan pertains to recording heads with a magnetic gap of 0.30 microns or less. Most devices using this technology, such as 8 mm video recorders, utilize a gap of less than 0.30 microns.
