KODAK RANKS FIRST AMONG U.S. COMPANIES,
 FOURTH WORLDWIDE, IN PATENTS ISSUED
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) received more U.S. patents in 1991 than any other U.S.-based corporation and, overall, was the fourth largest recipient of U.S. patents, according to information released by the Commerce Department's Patent and Trademark Office.
Kodak was issued 863 patents in 1991, compared with 720 in 1990, and 589 in 1989. The top three recipients in 1991 were Toshiba (1,014 patents), Mitsubishi Electric (936) and Hitachi (927).
Rounding out the top 10 recipients were Canon (823 patents), General Electric (809), Fuji Photo Film (731), IBM (679), U.S. Phillips (650) and Motorola (613).
The company credits its success in patent filings to a patent portfolio improvement program begun in the mid 1980s. As recently as 1987, Kodak ranked 24th among worldwide recipients of U.S. patents.
"Thanks to a cooperative improvement program involving inventors, patent attorneys and research managers, Kodak now files about 1,000 applications for patents each year and many of them are filed within six months after attorneys learn of the inventions," noted Ogden H. Webster, Kodak's Assistant General Counsel for its Patent Legal Staff.
