KODAK LINKS WITH WESTLIGHT TO MARKET 'PHOTO CD CATALOG'
OFFERING THOUSANDS OF PHOTOS IN DIGITAL FORMAT
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a fast-moving rollout of its Photo CD technology into the professional and commercial markets, Kodak (NYSE: EK) has formed a joint relationship with the Los Angeles-based Westlight -- one of the largest stock photo agencies in the world, to market its new "Kodak Photo CD Catalog Disc Format." Terms of the agreement were not announced.
This represents a natural marriage of hardware to software, i.e. Kodak's new leading-edge photo technology to Westlight's high-quality images and photo management. It's also a significant first step toward making visual information available in a standardized, multiplatform digital format as Westlight's photos can be manipulated on an Apple Macintosh or an IBM compatible or viewed on Kodak's new CD-ROM player that's connected to a television set.
By using easy-to-follow Image Search Instructions, art directors, graphic designers, desktop publishers and multimedia producers can digitally view selections of Westlight's 2 million photos and images from a number of subject categories such as Europe, Pacific Rim, Backgrounds, Textures, Special Effects and Marketing Concepts such as "global," "stability" and "success" among others.
The first Photo CD Catalog disc with the initial sampling of 3,000 Westlight images will be available in late October at a moderate charge for postage and handling. Users will be able to search for their photo of choice and then use it to create "comp" layouts. Rights to have the original shipped overnight for usage in ads, brochures or magazine covers will be negotiated as in the past.
"We view Westlight as a visionary company that has a unique grasp of our new products, the emerging digital CD-ROM technology and the issue of electronic image management," stated Stephen S. Stepnes, general manager and vice president of CD Imaging at Kodak. "And with Westlight's 10 years of image research, its commitment and enthusiasm, we're excited about exploring new markets with such a well-rounded and focused company."
Founded in 1978 by former National Geographic photographer Craig Aurness, Westlight is one of a few firms selected by Kodak as part of the development of the Photo CD technology for commercial applications. These include Apple Computer, Applied Technologies, J. Walter Thompson, Young and Rubicam and The Getty Museum.
"This represents a quantum leap in versatility for our clients," announced Aurness. "Now creative teams can review and discuss each photo in a conference room instead of crowding around a light table. Then when a photo is selected, the art director can quickly import the image into programs such as Photoshop and create a comp for their client."
