KODAK INSIGHT SYSTEM WINS R&D 100 AWARD

 KODAK INSIGHT SYSTEM WINS
 R&D 100 AWARD
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) today was awarded an R&D 100 Award for its Kodak InSight thoracic imaging system. The award is given annually by R&D Magazine to the 100 inventions which its panel of judges deems to be the most innovative, important, unique and useful.
The Kodak InSight thoracic imaging system was introduced by Kodak's Health Sciences Division in 1991 specifically for radiographic studies of the chest. In clinical trials, radiologists selected images made on the InSight products as diagnostically superior to those on conventional films.
The InSight system combines a dual-emulsion film with two different intensifying screens. One emulsion and screen is designed to record the denser areas of the chest, such as the mediastinum, with reduced noise; the other emulsion and screen records the less dense lung region with high resolution. Both images appear in register as a single image for interpretation. Unique crossover-control layers between the emulsions and film base separate the images to preserve the quality of the composite image. Conventional film/screen systems combine a film having the same emulsion on both sides with two identical intensifying screens.
"The InSight system enables radiologists to view all the anatomy in the chest area with a single examination," said Claude J. Crawford, vice president and director of research, development, and manufacturing systems for Kodak's Health Sciences Division. "It is no longer necessary to select an area of interest in the chest and sacrifice information in the other areas."
R&D Award winners are selected by panels of three to five judges, each of whom is an expert in the category being reviewed. Approximately 1,000 applications were submitted in 1992 for review in 20 categories. Awards were presented at a special ceremony at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. The award winners will appear in a special exhibit at the museum starting Sept. 24 and running through Oct. 22.
