KODAK, SONY AND HITACHI ANNOUNCE SPECIFICATION FOR HOME VIDEO PRINTERS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. and TOKYO, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK), Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT) and Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE) today announced agreement on a specification for a video print pack for thermal dye transfer printers used in the home. This specification will be made available by license to manufacturers worldwide of thermal dye transfer printers, print paper and donor cartridges, who also will be eligible to use the "VP" trademark to denote compatibility with this specification.
Currently, there are several types of thermal dye transfer printers on the market used mainly in business and commercial applications. But the thermal dye transfer print paper and donor cartridges differ from one manufacturer to another. The three companies are offering the license to encourage production of compatible thermal dye transfer products (printers, print paper and cartridges).
Thermal dye transfer printers are capable of producing high quality color prints from video and digital sources. With images being produced in the home with video cameras/camcorders and electronic still cameras, and with the market moving toward high resolution, high quality images such as those from the Photo CD system, high resolution camcorders and HDTV, demand is becoming increasingly popular for printers used in the home. The three companies believe that end users will benefit from the convenience of compatible thermal dye transfer products.
