KODAK, CANON, FUJI, MINOLTA, AND NIKON FORM R&D PROJECT

 KODAK, CANON, FUJI, MINOLTA,
 AND NIKON FORM R&D PROJECT
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) announced today it had made a filing with the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Justice Department and with the Federal Trade Commission under the National Cooperative Research Act.
The Feb. 18 filing states Kodak's intention to undertake a cooperative research and development project with four Japanese manufacturers (Canon Inc., Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., Minolta Camera Co., Ltd. and Nikon Corporation). According to the filing, the project is designed "to investigate options for advanced silver-halide photographic systems that could provide enhanced benefits and flexibility of use, and to enable the addition of desirable features as the project proceeds."
Kodak said this filing is appropriate in cases where cooperation between companies takes place.
The company said it was too early to speculate on the timing for development of any potential new system.
Kodak indicated that the group has been formed to assure the representation of technical expertise across all aspects of the project. It said the purpose of the project was to pursue the goals of enhanced benefits and improved quality for users, and thereby encourage the growth of the photographic industry. The parties foresee making the outcome of the project available to other companies in a consistent and orderly way.
Because of the proprietary nature of this agreement, Kodak would not comment further.
