KOCH ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION OF CORPUS CHRISTI REFINERY
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Koch Refining Company announced today that it will construct a series of heavy sour crude oil conversion units at its refinery here. The project is expected to add 1,400 construction jobs and 100 permanent positions to the Nueces County economy over the next few years.
The project will include a coker, gas-oil hydrotreater, and associated support facilities. Construction is expected to begin after all permits have been issued and take approximately 24 months to complete.
John Ehlen, president of Koch Refining Company, said this heavy sour crude conversion project will enable the refinery to process virtually any low-gravity, high-sulfur crude oil in the world and provide it with the flexibility to adjust product yields and quality to meet anticipated future market requirements.
"Corpus Christi continues to play a major role in Koch's long-term growth strategy," Ehlen emphasized. "We're committed to our operations here and in South Texas."
David Lamp, manager of the refinery, said the project is the second phase in a series of major expansions to convert the refinery into a fully integrated 250,000 barrels-per-day facility. Lamp said construction is already underway on a new 120,000 barrel per day crude oil atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit, a distillate hydrotreater, expansion of the wastewater treatment facility and expansion of the paraxylene facility.
To support the growth of the refinery, Lamp noted that Koch has also purchased the Ingleside Terminal, Corpus Christi Marine Terminal, expanded its pipeline and gathering systems and constructed its Texas Pipeline that carries fuel products from the refinery to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport with terminals in San Antonio, Austin and Waco, Tex.
Koch's Corpus Christi Refinery currently employs more than 820 permanent employees with another 200 employed as contract employees.
Koch Refining Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries, Inc., headquartered in Wichita, Kan. Koch is a privately owned concern which is involved in virtually all phases of the oil industry, chemicals, chemical technology products, agriculture and minerals.
