KNOWLEDGEWARE ANNOUNCES THE LEGACY WORKBENCH(TM) Includes Comprehensive Tools for System Maintenance, Redesign, Migration

BOSTON, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its Redevelopment Solution, KnowledgeWare, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: KNOW) today announced the Legacy Workbench.
The Legacy Workbench is a comprehensive set of tools that accelerate the maintenance, redesign and migration of existing mainframe-based systems. This cooperative processing product running under OS/2 and MVS is comprised of four components: (1) Application Assessment; (2) Program Documentation; (3) Program Restructuring; and (4) Graphical Maintenance.
"KnowledgeWare's Redevelopment Solution includes tools, training, methodology and professional services to support organizations as they migrate to client/server computing environments without losing the rich legacy of their past," explained Donald P. Addington, KnowledgeWare president and chief operating officer. "The Legacy Workbench is key to making business decisions as to whether existing systems should be maintained, redeveloped or discarded, and then accelerating and automating that process."
The new OS/2-based Graphical Maintenance facility accelerates source code maintenance with synchronized, graphical views of a program's (1) high-level structure charts; (2) detailed flow charts of the execution sequence; and (3) actual source code. The three synchronized views allow developers to quickly understand the architecture of a program. The views are dynamically linked so that changes made in one view are automatically reflected in the other views.
The Application Assessment, Program Documentation and Program Restructuring components are based on products originally acquired from Language Technology, Inc. in 1991. These products, which are based on Inspector, Pinpoint and Recoder, have been significantly enhanced in this release with the addition of new OS/2 graphical-user interfaces (GUI) to interact with these mainframe resident tools.
Application Assessment measures and graphically depicts the quality of an entire application by applying industry-standard metrics based on syntax, complexity, structure and errors. Program Documentation accelerates software maintenance by providing analysis, measurement and documentation at the program level. Program Restructuring automatically generates functionally equivalent restructured code.
Other components of KnowledgeWare's Redevelopment Solution include Flashpoint(TM) and the Application Development Workbench(R) (ADW). Flashpoint quickly creates new Windows-based graphical user interfaces for existing and restructured legacy applications. Flashpoint-developed GUIs can integrate information at the desktop from one or more legacy systems, pulling information from PCs, mid-range and mainframe applications.
Developers can extract specific pieces of logic from a program with the Legacy Workbench and import them into the ADW encyclopedia for reuse in new or other migrated applications. Using the ADW/Design Workstation, developers can determine functional complexity through function point analyses, perform association analyses and conduct impact analyses to estimate the potential costs of migrating to new environments. ADW/Construction Workstation for client/server, mid-range or mainframe environments can then regenerate code targeted for new platforms and environments.
In addition, KnowledgeWare's Application Development Solution Services (ADSS) division has researched, defined and mapped a detailed methodology to help companies maintain, modernize, reverse engineer or re-implement systems to improve productivity and quality. The methodology provides a framework to guide developers through nine independent phases of the redevelopment life cycle.
The Legacy Workbench is scheduled for early support program availability in June 1993.
KnowledgeWare is the market leader in providing application development solutions for client/server, mid-range and mainframe environments. KnowledgeWare's Application Development Workbench is currently used by more than 4,200 companies and supported by 70 independent software vendor and consultant products. As of March 31, KnowledgeWare had shipped more than 108,000 products to 35 countries, and had revenue in excess of $115 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1992. Revenues for the nine months ending March 31, 1993, were more than $88 million.
