KNOWLAND NAMED STERLING DIRECTOR

 HOUSTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: STX) has named Raymond R. Knowland a member of its board of directors, effective Dec. 15, 1992.
 Knowland retired in March as a managing director of The British Petroleum Company plc, a position he had held for two years. He also served as chairman of BP Chemicals Limited, BP Chemicals International Limited, BP Properties Limited, Kaldair International Limited and BP Nutrition Limited. He is past president of the Chemical Industries Association Limited and currently serves as a director of International Technology, British Standards Institution and Laporte.
 "Mr. Knowland's extensive international chemical experience will be valuable to Sterling in today's global marketplace," said J. Virgil Waggoner, Sterling's president and chief executive officer.
 Sterling is a major producer of seven intermediate petrochemical products -- styrene monomer, acrylonitrile, acetic acid, plasticizers, lactic acid, tertiary butylamine and sodium cyanide -- at its facilities in Texas City, Texas. The company recently completed the acquisition of a pulp chemicals business which produces sodium chlorate at four plants and sodium chlorite at one plant in Canada and licenses and constructs large-scale chlorine dioxide generators used in the pulp industry. Sterling Chemicals is headquartered in Houston, Texas. The company's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol STX.
