KNIGHT-RIDDER SELECTS MCI AS LONG DISTANCE CARRIER IN THREE-YEAR, $15 MILLION AGREEMENT

MIAMI, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Knight-Ridder, Inc. (NYSE: KRI) has selected MCI to provide 800, virtual network (Vnet) and data communications services in a three-year, $15 million agreement.
Knight-Ridder is deploying MCI 800 Service for use by its news organizations at 29 daily newspapers in more than 50 locations worldwide.
Reporters will use the toll-free service to communicate stories and updates from around the world to newsroom editors. In addition, Knight- Ridder newspapers will use MCI inbound services in special applications inviting reader participation.
"MCI has become our primary long distance company for 800 Service in large part because of the flexible solutions MCI has brought our member newspapers," said Michael Daugherty, Knight-Ridder manager of communications.
One such solution occurred recently at The Miami Herald.
"We ran an education science article inviting youngsters in Broward County to call a local number to hear recorded sounds of frogs," explained Frank MacDonald, Miami Herald manager of communications. "At the last minute, we learned the recording equipment was not working properly at the local site.
"Immediately, our MCI national account team went to work. They installed an 800 number in a matter of 10 minutes to reroute the callers to a crystal-clear recording at our headquarters.
"The fast action resulted in a huge success, as we received some 6,000 calls from kids over the two-day program."
Knight-Ridder uses MCI's access integration technology with Dialed Number Identification Service to enable member newspapers to use individual lines to make outgoing calls or receive 800 calls.
"MCI also delivers the industry's most accurate and detailed billing system and has backed up its technology with an extremely responsive national account team," Daugherty added.
"We're delighted to become Knight-Ridder's primary long distance carrier for voice services," said Jim Wilkes, vice president - MCI Business Markets. "We look forward to continuing to serve Knight- Ridder's growing communications needs as it develops new ways to deliver information to its audiences."
Knight-Ridder is an international communications company engaged in newspaper publishing, business news and information services, electronic retrieval services, news, graphics and photo services, cable television and newsprint manufacturing. The company publishes 29 daily newspapers in the United States. Around the world, news, advertising and information from Knight-Ridder reaches nearly 100 million people in more than 100 countries.
MCI Business Markets, formed as MCI Business Services in August 1992, is based in Atlanta and provides long distance voice, data and video telecommunications to America's businesses. The largest operating unit in the MCI family, Business Markets recently launched Proof Positive, an industry innovation that established a new benchmark in the way long distance service is provided and savings proven to customers.
MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC), headquartered in Washington, was incorporated in 1968 and was the first company authorized by the FCC to compete with AT&T in the domestic long distance market. Today, MCI is an $11 billion enterprise offering a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest sophisticated networks. The company is the second- largest telecommunications provider in the U.S. and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 nations.
