KNIGHT-RIDDER RELEASES STATISTICAL REPORT FOR FOUR WEEKS ENDED FEB. 28, 1993

 MIAMI, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Knight-Ridder, Inc. (NYSE: KRI) today released its monthly statistical report for the four weeks ended Feb. 28, 1993 as follows --
 Newspapers
 Total newspaper advertising revenue rose 5.0 percent in the second period corresponding to February. Total full-run ROP linage was up 3.4 percent.
 Classified again led the way with a 9.6 percent gain in revenue on a 7.5 percent improvement in full-run ROP classified linage. We experienced very strong performance in Miami and Akron and good performance in San Jose and Detroit.
 Retail advertising revenue was up 3.7 percent on a 1.6 percent improvement on full-run ROP retail linage. St. Paul, Detroit, Charlotte and Philadelphia had good months in retail.
 General advertising revenue was down 3.3 percent on a 12.4 percent drop in full-run ROP general linage. The weakness was widespread although Philadelphia and Akron performed well.
 Circulation revenue rose 2.2 percent.
 Business Information Services
 BIS revenue was up 6.1 percent for the month. Dialog gains were lower than expected, but MoneyCenter sales continued to do well, particularly in Europe and Asia.

 (A) -- On Nov. 27, 1989, the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press began operations under a Joint Operating Agreement as the Detroit Newspaper Agency (DNA). Revenue, linage and circulation for 1992 and 1991 include 50 percent of the DNA.
 (B) -- Full run ROP linage of the joint operating agency between the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post Intelligencer was 186 for the period (down 7.6 percent from the prior year) and 374 for the year-to-date (down 7.3 percent from the prior year). Knight-Ridder owns 49.5 percent of the voting stock and 65 percent of the non-voting common stock of the Seattle Times. None of the linage is included in the Advertising Linage section.
