KNIGHT-RIDDER ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT CHANGE AT AKRON BEACON JOURNAL
MIAMI, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Knight-Ridder, Inc. (NYSE: KRI) today announced a management change at the Akron Beacon Journal.
John L. Dotson Jr., president and publisher of the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., was promoted to president and publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal effective June 29. He replaces Christopher M. Harte, who is leaving the company to become president of Portland Newspapers in Portland, Maine.
"John will be a superb addition to the leadership of the Beacon Journal and the Akron community. He has done an excellent job in Boulder. He has deep experience with major news organizations, including our Philadelphia and Detroit newspapers, and Newsweek magazine," said Knight-Ridder President P. Anthony Ridder. "Akron and the Beacon Journal are especially important to our company, and we are sending them one of our best."
Dotson, 55, has been publisher in Boulder since 1987. Prior to that time, he served as director of night operations at Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc. (PNI), transportation and circulation administration manager of the Philadelphia Daily News and executive assistant to the president of PNI. He also worked in the editorial departments of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Dotson began his career as a reporter for the Newark Evening News and was later a reporter for the Detroit Free Press. He spent 17 years with Newsweek magazine, where he held posts as Los Angeles bureau chief and senior editor/news editor, before joining PNI in 1983.
He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Temple University in 1958, and received an honorary degree from Temple in 1981. He and his wife, Peggy, have five children.
Harte, 44, has been with Knight-Ridder nine years. Before moving to Akron in 1989, Harte served as president and publisher of the State College Centre Daily Times; on the Knight-Ridder corporate staff as assistant to the senior vice president/operations and assistant to the president of the Newspaper Division; and as assistant to the publisher of The Miami Herald.
"Chris is a bright and hard-working newspaper executive. He built a strong management team in Akron and led successful efforts to improve the Beacon Journal and its operations. He'll make a major contribution in Portland and I wish him well," said Knight-Ridder Vice President/Operations Jay Harris.
