KMART SWEEPSTAKES WINNER RACING IN SOAP BOX DERBY CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

KMART SWEEPSTAKES WINNER RACING IN SOAP BOX DERBY CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT
TROY, Mich., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- As the green flag is waved, rookie soap box derby driver Grant Rowland, a 14-year-old from Lynnfield, Mass., will launch his national racing career in the soap box derby stock car he won through a Kmart sweepstakes. The Soap Box Derby All-American championships will be held on Aug. 8, 1992, in Akron, Ohio.
Rowland won the soap box stock car kit as a prize in a national soap box derby sweepstakes presented by Kmart and 11 of its candy and snack suppliers earlier this year. In total, 400 soap box stock car kits were distributed to sweepstakes winners nationwide.
Rowland, a first-time derby racer, built the stock car himself with only supervisory support from his parents Ken and Sue Rowland.
His craftsmanship paid off when he won the 1992 New Hampshire local soap box derby competition and took home honors as "Rookie of the Year." Now he is hoping to visit victory lane again by defeating 57 other participants in the stock car division at the All-American championship.
Over half a century old, the All-American Soap Box Derby championship features three racing divisions -- Kit Car, Masters, and Stock Car, developed especially for first-time entrants. In all, 208 boys and girls ages 9 to 16 will compete in the national race.
"Like Kmart, the All-American Soap Box Derby is a great American tradition that offers kids and their families an exciting and educational experience," said David L. Schuvie, Kmart's vice president, Sales Promotion.
"We're happy our Kmart sweepstakes has opened a whole new world of learning and competitive opportunity for Grant and wish him success at the championships," Schuvie added.
Racing venues are familiar to Kmart. The giant retailer sponsors the Kmart/Havoline race team featuring Mario and Michael Andretti as well as the West Virginia Mountain Classic international cycling race.
Kmart Corporation serves America with more than 4,000 retail stores in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Currently operating 2,300 Kmart stores, Kmart Corporation also is the parent company for PayLess Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, PACE Membership Warehouse, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
