KMART ROLLOUT OF SYMBOL SPECTRUM ONE NETWORK REACHES 1,200 STORES THROUGHOUT U.S. BOHEMIA, N.Y., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced that its Laser Radio Terminals (LRT 3800) with Spectrum One(R) wireless spread spectrum data communications networks at Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) are now operating at more than half of 2,383 U.S. Kmart stores. Symbol and its Spectrum One network and LRT 3800s are an integral part of the Kmart Information Network (KIN II). KIN II recently won top honors in the annual Smithsonian Computerworld awards competition, and Symbol was recognized as a critical supplier of advanced technology. The LRT 3800 integrates in a hand-held portable unit the Symbol Spectrum One high-speed, wireless radio frequency data communications technology with the company's bar code laser scanning and full-powered, 16-bit DOS computer capabilities. Kmart, one of the world's largest retailers, uses the LRT and Spectrum One network for a number of advanced merchandise ordering and real-time applications to improve customer service and reduce expenses. "We plan to continue the rollout to all U.S. Kmart stores during the next five months," said David M. Carlson, senior vice president of Kmart Corporate Information Systems. "We've been using this flexible and cost-effective retail automation and information management tool in Kmart stores since last summer and are very pleased with the functionality it offers and its ease of use." At each store, LRT 3800s communicate via spread spectrum radio frequency technology with the store's UNIX-based file server over a Token Ring network. This high speed data communications system requires no individual site license from the FCC. Kmart also utilizes Symbol Technologies LS 2000 and LS 7000 bar code scanners at point-of-sale. "We're working closely with Kmart as the rollout proceeds on schedule in order for Kmart to reap the full benefits of this technology chain-wide as rapidly as possible," said Raymond Martino, president of Symbol Technologies. "LRT/Spectrum One is part of Kmart's on-going program to provide quality service to its customers. "We join in congratulating Kmart in its Smithsonian award for innovative use, development and implementation of customer-oriented technology."
