KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MAY SALES INCREASE
TROY, Mich., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM)

today reported a sales increase of 6.7 percent for May 1992 over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales for the four- week period ended May 27, 1992, amounted to $2,925,153,000, vs. sales of $2,741,653,000 for the four weeks ended May 29, 1991.
Sales for the 17 weeks ended May 27, 1992, were $11,191,516,000, up 7.8 percent from the $10,385,278,000 for the first 17 weeks of 1991.
Kmart Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Joseph E. Antonini said, "As a result of continuing strong comparable store sales gains in the specialty store businesses, our comparable store sales increased 1.8 percent in May. The gain was achieved despite colder- than-normal weather that adversely affected a number of important Kmart discount store spring businesses, most notably apparel and our outdoor garden shop. This is in sharp contrast to the ideal weather conditions in the East and Midwest portions of the country in May of 1991 that resulted in an 8.5-percent comparable store sales increase for that selling period, which was the best monthly sales gain for all of last year. However, certain non-seasonal businesses, such as our consumables and prescription drug departments, performed well during the month.
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,381 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and Midwest stock exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
