KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MARCH SALES INCREASE

 TROY, Mich., April 8, 1993 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart Corporation
(NYSE: KM) today reported a sales increase of 7.8% for March 1993
over sales during the same period of last year. Consolidated sales
for the five-week period ended March 31, 1993 amounted to
$3,395,850,000, versus sales of $3,150,308,000 for the five weeks
 ended April 1, 1992.
Sales for the nine weeks ended March 31, 1993 were $5,936,678,000,
up 8.5% from the $5,470,450,000 for the first nine weeks of 1992.
"Sales in March were below plan, as they were in February, because
of severe winter weather during much of the month," said
Joseph E. Antonini, Kmart chairman of the board and chief executive
officer. "The mid-March storm affected between 1,000 and 1,100
Kmart discount stores over a three-day period, with well over 400
stores closed all or part of the day on Saturday, March 13, and 150
to 200 stores closed all or part of the day on Sunday. These
adverse weather conditions affected not only the discount stores but
the specialty store group as well."
"Sales rebounded strongly, especially in apparel lines, in the final
week of the month when weather conditions improved," said Antonini.
"However, because of the profit shortfall in February and March,
continuing strong sales in April will be necessary for earnings for
the quarter ending April 28, 1993 to equal or exceed the $0.26 per
share earned in the first quarter of 1992."
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in
all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico, Canada, the
Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kmart, currently operating 2,408 Kmart
stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse,
Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports
 Authority, OfficeMax and Borders.
Kmart Corporation's stock is listed on the New York, Pacific and
Midwest Stock Exchanges. Its trading symbol is KM.
