KMART CORPORATION CHOOSES MCI FOR TELECOM SERVICES IN A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR AGREEMENT

RYE BROOK, N.Y., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI (NASDAQ: MCIC) today announced that it has been selected to serve as Kmart Corporation's major provider of telecommunications services. Under the new four-year multi-million dollar agreement, Kmart has expanded and extended its current business relationship with MCI. Kmart is another mr? company switching its 800 traffic from AT&T to MCI under the FCC "800 Portability" ruling effective on May 1, 1993.
MCI provides Kmart Corporation with a comprehensive array of voice and data communications services linking the company's 4,000 Kmart and subsidiary locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Kmart will use MCI's Vnet, a virtual private network, Vnet Calling Cards, MCI Payphone Service, MCI Digital Data Services and MCI Forum, a conference calling service.
With this agreement, Kmart becomes MCI's largest conference calling customer and user of MCI Forum. "MCI's unattended conference calling service allows conference call participants to use their telephone key pad to enter a password instead of going through an operator," said Jonathan Crane, president of MCI National Accounts. "It's a new feature born out of innovation to meet Kmart's needs and, once commercially available, the needs of all MCI customers who use conference calling extensively."
Kmart Corporation serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and Puerto Rico, Canada, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kmart, currently operating 2,409 retail stores, is also the parent company of PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports Authority, OfficeMax and Borders.
Headquartered in Washington, MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through a state-of-the-art global telecommunications network. The company, with 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, is the nation's second-largest long distance provider and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
