KMART BECOMES FIRST MAJOR RETAILER TO CARRY BIODEGRADABLE, STARCH-BASED GOLF TEES

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Kmart (NYSE: KM) has become the first national retail store chain to carry a new, completely biodegradable golf tee made from NOVON(R) specialty polymer, a blend of corn and potato starches and other ingredients. The tee can help improve golf course maintenance and provide golfers with an alternative to plastic and wood tees.
Eco-Tee(TM) golf tees, which are distributed by Dennco, Inc. of Salem, N.H., perform like traditional tees, but quickly and safely degrade in turf and soil to help leave golf courses clean and easier to maintain.
"We are committed to marketing unique golf products like Eco-Tee golf tees, which enhance the game for all players," said Jim Dennesen, president of Dennco, Inc.
"They perform like plastic and wood tees, but quickly decompose on the golf course in a few weeks, which should help reduce tee litter and maintenance costs.
"In addition, the use of Eco-Tee golf tees can help preserve thousands of birch trees annually by lowering the number of trees cut to product wood tees," he said.
Previous "biodegradable" golf tees were made from a densely packed mixture of peat moss and syrup. The tee biodegraded, but was often rough and unattractive and sometimes disintegrated before it could be used on the course.
The Eco-Tee is manufactured by Terra Form, Inc., of Dalton, Mass., using NOVON specialty polymer, a unique new material that looks and feels like plastic yet biodegrades like paper. In fact, tees made from NOVON polymer were recently permitted under the Rules of Golf, as promulgated by the United States Golf Association in Far Hills, N.J. NOVON polymer is manufactured by Warner-Lambert Co.
After soil contact, a rain shower or course watering, Eco-Tee golf tees quickly and safely break down on the course into water, carbon dioxide (or methane) and biomass, plus trace amounts of naturally occurring inorganic materials. These materials contain no fertilizer, grass seed or other ingredients, which would modify the soil.
These new tees may also help reduce groundskeeping problems associated with broken plastic or wood tees, which may require frequent and time-consuming hand-raking or can jam mowing equipment. The latter problem can result in grooved, uneven mowing jobs unacceptable to most golf players and course managers.
Eco-Tee golf tees are packaged in 100 percent recycled plastic and cardboard. They are available at Kmart stores in a full color "blister pack" of 20 and also at local golf pro shops in the "blister pack" and bulk packs of 100, 1,000 and 10,000.
Dennco, Inc. is an international distributor of innovative and unique golfing equipment and products.
Novon Products Group manufactures and markets NOVON specialty polymers, which are based on starch and other biodegradable materials. NOVON polymers perform like plastic but biodegrade like paper in biologically active environments, such as in the production and end-use of compost or in sewage treatment disposal. NOVON polymers are designed to be converted by microbes into water, carbon dioxide and biomass, plus trace amounts to naturally occurring inorganic materials. The company's plant in Rockford, Ill., is capable of producing 100 million pounds annually, making it the world's largest facility dedicated to the production of biodegradable polymers.
Kmart operates nearly 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States, and Puerto Rico, Canada, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Kmart, currently operating 2,409 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, Payless Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, The Sports Authority, OfficeMax, and Borders.
